Adult stem cells cannot become all the cell types found in the human body, but they are as versatile as embryonic stem cells. Stem cells were first used for the umbilical cord, and bone mallow transplantation. However, the inability of adult stem cells to become all the cell types found in the human body made some scientists believe that adult stem cells are inferior to embryonic stem cells. By reprogramming adult stem cells, scientists hope they can make adult cells capable of becoming any cell type in the human body. Reprogrammed adult stem cells are also referred to as induced pluripotent stem cells.
All the stem cells found in the human body can be developed from induced pluripotent stem cells, just like in embryonic stem cells. Even though dividing to create every type of cell found in the human body is not within the capacity of adult stem cells, they available in plenty and have a low risk of immune system injection in patients. All cells making the embryo are stem cells within the first four to five days after fertilization. The stem cells in embryos are responsible for developing into any type of cell in the human body. The stem cells forming the embryo cease to be pluripotent five or six days after fertilization.
Perinatal stem cells are mostly sourced from amniotic fluid and tissue, umbilical cord blood and tissue, and placental blood and tissue. The main ways of harvesting adult stem cells are bone marrow extraction, blood draw, and tissue fat extraction, referred to as liposuction. Embryos used to harvest embryonic stem cells are multiplied in a laboratory and not grown in a woman’s womb. About ten percent of a donor’s bone marrow is extracted; hence if you want to be a stem cell donor, you should be prepared to feel fatigued and sore for a few weeks. When stem cells are being extracted from a donor’s bone marrow, the donor sedated so that the procedure can be painless.
